Style Favorites: Maternity Edition

I'm currently 7 weeks postpartum and cleared to start getting back to "normal" activity. It seems like enough time to have had a look at what I wore during my pregnancy and to know what I really liked and what didn't work for me.  I showed really late, I was probably around 25-26 weeks before I had a bump that took me out of my normal clothes and even then I was still fairly small. Because of that I didn't really invest in maternity clothing. By the time I got to the point where things didn't fit or I didn't like how they fit I was less than 10 weeks from my due date. That said, we had 3 weddings to attend this year and my baby shower. I also worked until I went into labor, which was luckily a Sunday, so I did have to dress myself until the end. Another disclaimer, I was able to have a relaxed wardrobe for work which also kept me from buying more maternity wear and using what I had in my closet. My first favorite: Black Blanqi Maternity Leggings . I was re

Hair Today...

For those of you that have been around for a while you may know that I have had a lot of hair changes in the last I guess 3 years. Around 3 years ago now I had shoulder-ish length relaxed hair that predominantly suffered from breakage probably due to chemical processing and taking so-so care of it. When I was towards the end of my study abroad trip I decided that after longing for colored hair (this was circa 2013 btw) I was just going to go ahead and bleach it. I did. I didn't hate it, but my hair did. I had suffered from a lot of breakage (I associate it to stress that I had) right at the beginning of my trip that had started to grow back in, unrelaxed, at the back and the rest was starting to break from the bleach and the double whammy of chemical processes. So after I got home I cut it all off. The relaxed part that is. I had been thinking about doing it for a while and this just felt like the right time to me. I also knew that with only one process in my hair my hair would likely be healthier. Fast forward 2 years and my hair is basically the same length it was when I cut it (it should probably be longer but, bleach) and I'm on the hunt for the perfect level of lightness.
I'm black so I'm trying not to go too light or too yellow but I also want to go light enough so that when I do colorful dyes they come out a color I'm happy with. I've recently added a few new guys in to the rotation and I'm excited to see how we get on! I wanted to give you guys an update so you can follow with me for the end result!
This is probably the most accurate "before" picture. Yes I know I just used it but it's semi recent! I had been using the Summer Highlights from Organix and I wasn't really noticing much of a change but was noticing my hair texture seemed rougher almost and I think I was experiencing more breakage. I also had a TON of knots after a while and had to go through my hair finger detangling, combing and with a pair of hair shears to get out what wasn't working its way out. It definitely wasn't working for my hair and I'm not sure if it would work out better for someone with a different hair type or lighter hair but it was no bueno for me!

I was in my local Walgreens recently and they had a few "salon quality" products for sale and since they were about 50% off (still were a little expensive for my taste) I decided now was my best time to try them out. I picked up the Fekkai PrX Reparatives Shampoo, Joico K-Pak Deep Penetrating Reconstructor Conditioner and John Freida Sheer Blonde Go Blonder Conditioner (for my attempts to lighten my hair without bleaching more). So Far I'm not so sure about the Joico conditioner, and after I use the Fekkai shampoo my hair does feel a bit sturdier (it has argan extract in it and I think that might be the reason). I do REALLY like the go blonder, I've already noticed that the lighter parts of my hair do seem to be getting lighter and it makes my hair really soft when I use it which is always a plus! It also only costs around 6 or 7 dollars so it's not a break the bank product either but it's really been working for me! I'll keep you guys in the loop for how I get on with them in the coming weeks!
